25 tax investigators join new unit to target offshore activities

07/12/2011

HM Revenue and Customs has formed a new group of tax investigators to target offshore accounts.

Twenty-five new recruits will join the Offshore Co-ordination Unit (OCU) which will primarily look at bank account date gathered through various amnesties and procured data discs.

The new recruits are part of the 100 new roles announced by Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, back in September.

An HMRC spokesman said no timescale has been set in allocating the remaining 75 roles.

David Gauke, Exchequer secretary to the Treasury, said: “The launch of this specialist unit, together with the other valuable work the department is driving forward in an effort to tackle offshore tax evasion, underlines the fact that offshore tax cheats are fast running out of places to hide.”
