Employers Alerted Over New Online Filing Requirement
07/10/2008
A reminder is going out to businesses with 50 or more employees that they need to be ready for increased “e-communication” with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in just a few months time.
From 6 April 2009, employers with 50 or more employees must send starter and leaver information (forms P45, P46 and similar pension details) to HMRC online.
For employers who operate their own payrolls, using accountants to e-file year end figures, the move represents a significant change.
Vicki Swanton, from Harris Lipman’s payroll team, said: “Employers need to start thinking now about how they will deal with the requirement to make online submissions, whether through their accountant or in-house, and it would be a good idea to put arrangements in place well in advance of April 2009 to deal with any teething troubles.”
Under current government proposals, employers with fewer than 50 employees will need to file PAYE end of year returns online from 6 April 2010 and PAYE in-year forms online from 6 April 2011.
